Shhhh, the sex scene in Fish Tank revealed

Just before I head off to Memphis, film critic Guy Lodge at In Contention viewed Fish Tank at the Edinburgh Film Festival today and he very much enjoyed the film. However, based on his comments about 'the scene' between Katie Jarvis and Michael Fassbender, it prompted me to email him to ask for details since I can't seem to find them anywhere else. I'm not one for spoilers, but because I'm so interested in how Andrea Arnold presented this moment, which we know happens, it's HOW it happens, and how in depth the scene is that appears to be of interest to many of us Fassy fans. While some of us are open to whatever is presented, respectfully, others may have serious issues with what goes down at the pivotal moment because of the girl's age, and, because Michael too is involved.

Because of what I will reveal below is spoiler in nature, you will need to highlight the area immediately after the arrow.

===> *** The film does have an extended scene of consenting, penetrative sexual intercourse between Fassbender's and Jarvis's characters. It depicts the act from beginning to end, but while it's atmospherically vivid, it's not graphically explicit. (Dim lighting, tasteful cutting, etc.) However, while not visually offensive, the fact that Jarvis's character is underage will be of concern to some viewers. ***

Okey-dokey now. Comments?

Thanks Guy!

Well I dont really have a reaction I guess. I am not easily offended not to I have to have a graphic sex scene. So eihter way the scene goes I am ok with it. Ijust am crossing all my fingers and toes that it comes to TIFF!

Glad you agree Tina. I want to see this so badly.

I'm in Memphis now, getting ready for a fun and busy day. Thx! xoxo

I still believe that the scene is wholly inappropriate considering Katie Jarvis age.

I understand your concerns Maura. However, do you plan on watching Fish Tank? I'm sure Katie has demonstrated maturity beyond her actual years to handle this role appropriately. She has won kudos for her performance thus far.

I don't plan on watching it as films like that are pointless and offensive and offer very little entertainment overall

Sorry Maura - that's just plain stupid. You can't say that 'films like this (what do you even mean by that??)offer very little entertainment' if you haven't even seen Fish Tank.
The movie is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. There was so much tension between Connor and Mia (Jarvis and Fassbender) they just had to have sex. Of course it's a bit shocking, but it is realistic. Holding hands is not always enough you know.
Oh and it's been almost sixty years that Lolita was first published...

JanaJana can I ask you - have you seen Red Road as well? Are there similarities between the films?

It is not forbidden to express an opinion on a film. What is the advantage of films like Fish Tank, may I ask or will I be shot for doing so? There is such a thing as thrashy films.

Yeah trashy films are films like Britney Spears' 'Crossroads' or 'Glitter' or 'American Pie' - these films don't do anything to us. They don't enrich our lives. If anything they mildly entertain us.
'Fish Tank' shows a different world. A world that is different if you don't happen to live in Tilbury, Essex and are a young, struggling teenage girl. And as I said, in this world it just wouldn't be realistic if the energy that clearly existed between the two protagonists, Connor and Mia, didn't erupt at some point.
I mean a sex scene between a thirtysomething and a 15-year old....have you watched Kintay or Saw, or Hostel? These are the films we should be worried about.

Hi Jana
I don't watch violent films so there is no way I would watch Saw for instance. Films that are ott in terms of violence or other elements I won't watch. I still think an older actress could have been playing the part that Katie Jarvis played.

To JenaJena
I wonder, since you have seen the film; how is Michael Fassbenders performance in the film? Is it any good?
