Chele Belle's X-MEN: FIRST CLASS review

This is a semi-review. This is my ill advised attempt at expressing how much I enjoyed X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

But first let me state a few facts: 1. I am not a comic book reader. Not because I think the material is inferior to my intellect or that it's silly but because there is so much other stuff that I enjoy reading. 2. I go see any and all comic book based movies...and I usually enjoy them all. I believe the best part of movies is escaping from the real world...even if it's only for a few hours. That said I enjoyed X-MEN: FIRST CLASS more than any other comic book based movie I have seen so far. And X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is by far the best of the X-Men movie series to date which is saying something considering how much fun it is to watch Hugh Jackman strut and growl all the while chomping on a cigar and glaring at any and everyone in his path.

So why so much praise for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS? The praise is largely due to two actors: James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. They give the story a class and poetry that can easily be lost when dealing with such fanciful material. James McAvoy is a great actor. He always plays characters with such honesty and generous spirit. He makes you want to know the care about their journey. His equal is Michael Fassbender. Fassbender's Magneto is flawed, damaged but strong, dangerous and full of righteous fury. A quote from the book DAMAGE by Josephine Hart came to mind while I was watching X-MEN: FIRST CLASS: 'Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive.' That sums up Magneto/Erik. Fassbender's portrayal of Magneto is an amazing journey of a victimized boy becoming a powerful dangerous man. Watching Erik enter a Russian general's country home and taking out everyone who steps to him just by throwing up his hand and crushing them was a turn on. Back in 1973 Henry Kissinger was quoted saying: Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac. That is so very true and when you see it being welded by a man that looks like Fassbender it's even more potent.

Much has been made of Fassbender taking over from Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond. I can take or leave that concept...I am not pulling for it BUT if it happens great. I just want Michael to get more roles and have an even bigger and better career in the long run.

Finally I have not bought any of the past comic book movies i.e. Superman, Spider-Man or Iron Man that I enjoyed. However, I definitely plan to get X-MEN: FIRST CLASS when it arrives on DVD.

Very nice review Chele Belle. I like how you state that this film is pure escapism, and fun. It's not to be taken seriously, but to also praise the high quality work that Michael and James contribute to this film. I don't make it a habit to go see comic superhero movies either, but one's well done is a nice treat, like First Class.
