BAFTA - The Finish Line

No matter what the outcome is tonight in the last Best Actor race for the 2011-2012 film season for Michael Fassbender at BAFTA, he has won so many honors and has generated so much publicity through his work in Shame, winning would just be icing on a delicious cake.

Come to FF to comment with other Fassinators as Michael attends BAFTA tonight. I will post pictures up as soon as possible. Follow @BAFTA on twitter or real-time updates on the programme. If there are live stream links, I or someone else will post them.

Good luck Michael! ♥
Michael with his parents, Adele and Josef Fassbender.

Michael at BAFTA tonight, no bow tie.

Will Bafta do the "right thing" or will they just focus on those who were also nominated for an Oscar because they weren't in an NC-17 film and kept their clothes on?

Anonymous said...

They had the guts to at least nominate him. But I won't be happy unless Michael wins. Oldman & DuJardin make me nervous though. I just can't see them awarding Clooney. At least they better not.

BBC America will be airing the show tonight. At least we'll know ahead of time if he wins. It'll make watching the show much more enjoyable.

I know there are many, but could a list be compiled of all the awards Michael has won since last Fall, starting at Venice?

Anonymous said...

And if Michael does win tonight, that's even more egg on the faces of the AMPAS. In my opinion anyway.

Manuela said...

im sure he ll win) when do they start?

Flora said...

Good luck Michael! (and also good luck Gary, the only other winner I will tolerate in this category - they both deserve it, to be fair)

For those in the UK, red carpet arrivals are on BBC3 from 7.30pm to 8pm before the main ceremony on BBC1 from 9pm onwards. I am going to put aside my usual loathing for awards ceremonies (sooo cringe-making) and actually watch this one. Although I may keep the sound off until near the end when Best Actor is announced.

Come on BAFTA, stick it to Hollywood, you know you want to. And let's keep it classy and avoid the willy jokes, thank you.

Flora said...

Oh, and Anonymous at 9.45am, you can view all the awards Michael has won on his IMDB page. Scroll down to the bottom, and click on "Awards" under "Opinion".

Anonymous said...

I think it will be either Gary Oldman or jean dujardin. Michael performance has been the best this year, but I think they will go the easy way and give it to Gary or Jean. As long as Clooney doesnt get it, I am fine.
Anon 9.45 am, there is complete list of all the awards that Michael has won on his wiki page. Have a look!

Anonymous said...

I agree, it will be Dujardin (London Film Critics Circle winner and European) or Gary Oldman (overdue industry Titan and homegrown boy). Michael is the only BAFTA nominee in the Best Actor category not nominated for an Oscar; I will be STUNNED if he wins. It would be such an obvious statement against AMPAS, an awards gala they are trying to emulate. Besides, BAFTA ignored Shame for most major categories, but loved the Artist and Tinker Tailor.

Simone said...

I understand why people think Jean or Gary will win, but Michael can pull it off. There have been many films in the past that the Oscars and BAFTA only felt that the acting was the stand out of a film and gave only one nomination and win to said film.

That is the dilemma with Shame. Although it may not have been a strong enough contender to get as many noms as the other films, but the main protagonists performance was exceptional.

There's a chance, that's all I'm saying.

Anonymous said...

If it wasn't such an obvious "screw you" to Oscar, I'd agree. But I just don't think BAFTA has the guts to break rank and do it.

I love to be wrong, though.

I can't watch the show tonight, it makes me so nervous. If Clooney gets it ...

The stars arrive on the red carpet at different times. The later you arrive, the more in-demand you are... or at least that's conventional thinking.

I'm honestly preparing myself for a Dujardin win. It doesn't get any safer than that.

Ranelle said...

I heard Michael wasn't shown on the red carpet? :( please say this trlecast won't be another Golden Globes.
Yay for Pitch Black Heist!!
Also- there was a tweet saying Brad Pitt said he thought Michael would get best actor! Awesome shout out.
Go Michael!

Anonymous said...

Michael was shown on the red carpet on E! as far as I know.

Anonymous said...

There are pics of Michael on the carpet. Miss Piggy interviewed him!! I so want video of that. He's wearing a lovely 3 piece suit. I love him on those.

I haven't seen The Artist. Does Dujardin talk at all in it? I would like my best male actor to actually deliver lines. But that's just me.

Manuela said...

he is in) and he was shown. clooney said Michael had to be 6th for oscar

Manuela said...

anon- director of artist said english people have great sense of humour bcs they nominated artist for sound)
nothing against Dujardin but im for Michael tonight!! he deserves it more than ever

Simone said...

Clooney needs to STFU. Sixth spot my ass!

Anonymous said...

Anon at 2:55: Dujardin did a great job of conveying emotion and subtlety without dialogue to aid him. Having said that, I thought The Artist was cute, but a trifle of a film. There was certainly nothing challenging or profound about it.

Anonymous said...

Simone: If Clooney had said Michael should had been nominated in the 5th spot, it would have been equivalent of saying Bichir didn't deserve it.

His answer was very diplomatic.

Simone said...

Clooney needs to just drop it, he adds nothing to this discussion. What's done, is done. He got his nom. I know exactly what he was saying, I don't need it translated.

Manuela said...

Simone - u know very well i cant stand him with Pitt together. just cant !!!! it makes me angry and nerve.

Anonymous said...

You guys had better get used to Clooney... apparently he and Michael get along very well in real life. This likely won't be the last you hear of him.

Simone said...

I have probably seen 90% of George Clooney's films, and I will see future ones as well. My annoyance at his fake attitude at this moment does not have long term implications. I do in fact look forward to seeing them work together. But this 6th spot shit is just bull shit!

Manuela said...

i wonder if only IFTA sees how Mchael deserves award? i really think Cloo Pit et Duj have to continue their games in the end of feb -i dont want to think BAFTA lies under AMFAS

Anonymous said...

Clooney's comment just rubs me the wrong way.

Simone said...

Exactly anon 3:14... who the fuck is he to say that Michael should have been 6th.

It was an arrogant comment from a an arrogant actor. Plain and simply.

Manuela said...

no shame the best outstanding british movie tinker tailor soldier spy -love it

Manuela said...

arrogant thats exactly bcs i really cant stand him. sorry just...

dshultz said...

Michael deserves this more than anyone. Except perhaps Gary.

But honestly, anybody but Clooney suits me fine.

Manuela said...

yes Gary is a gold middle)))))))))))))))))

dshultz said...

Clooney deserved the sixth spot!

Anonymous said...

It would have been far more politically astute for Clooney to say "I'd have given up my spot for Michael to be nominated".

That way he would have seemed humble and effusive in his praise of another actor's work.

Manuela said...

cloo never said it never. only after him.

Adam Deacon won Rising Star. I'll admit, I have to idea who he is.

Anonymous said...

I meant I have NO idea who he is.

Ranelle said...

I'm torn- I don't know if I should spoil who wins or wait for the broadcast here in Canada. Eek it's so hard to wait lol
Good luck Michael!!

Simone said...

I voted for Tom Hiddleston for the Orange rising star? Who the heck is Adam?

Anonymous said...

Fassbender wore a tux "made by Giorgio Armani from organic wool, with accents in recycled plastic bottles" says http://express.co.uk

I for one am happy that Deacon won Rising Star.

That means major surprises are still possible.

Only 5 awards left...

Simone said...

ok, time to take out the trash.

Anonymous said...

Knew it would be Dujardin. The Oscars just became a 2-way race between him and Clooney.

Ranelle said...

Well it looks like Jean is unbeatable. If he wins the Oscar, in my opinion, he'll be forgotten in no time.
I feel bad for Michael and Gary Oldman...

Simone said...

Manuela, you REALLY need to chill out. Please. Jean is deserving of his award, The Artist and his performance was EXCELLENT!

Flora said...

I am not watching the live broadcast - can't stand the tension! - so am waiting for you guys to blog the result. The show is on til 11pm here though; surely that means the Best Film/ Best Actor/ Best Actress awards won't be announced til about a quarter to eleven?

Damn it, got to be up at 6am tomorrow, and can't go to bed until I know the result.

Hmm, I wonder if Michael has been to bed yet? :D

Anonymous said...

I want to cry.

Time to start dinner & switch loads in the dryer.

If Michael were nominated for an Oscar I'd probably need valium to get through the show.

Anonymous said...

They key is educating yourself in regards to trends beforehand so you don't have unrealistic expectations. This result was predictable.

Flora said...

Oh well, cancel that whole comment. In the time it took me to type it, everything changed.

Can't believe that if it wasn't going to be Michael, that Gary didn't win - SHAME on you BAFTA. What's the point in your awards? It doesn't celebrate UK talent, hasn't for some years now, just cares about sucking up to Hollywood. Boo, hiss, and all that jazz. Boring, boring, predictable BAFTA.

Simone said...

I'm glad all this shit is over.

The lesson from all this is that Michael Fassbender has been officially recognized this awards season and ONE day, both Bafta and Oscar will find a clue and honor him appropriately.

Manuela said...

Dio mio why just why....no Michael ok but we have Gary. Dujardin is french so they have Cesar please go there and have great time. damn i feel so sorry for fassbender..seems u can work like a horse and get nothing or make 1 movie and get everything. just f*** them all. only irish r understandable

Ranelle said...

Anon at 4:27 - After the lack of an Oscar nomination and the NC-17 rating, I figured things would go down this way... doesn't mean my heart doesn't pound before the Best Actor announcement though lol.
Anyway, I think Michael's time is yet to come. People are learning his name and he'll get another chance very soon, I'm sure!!

Manuela- I know it sucks but... I love France go France!!! lol

Simone said...

Anon 4:29, your jaded view is appreciated, but some of us will continue to enjoy this concept called having 'hope'.

Anonymous said...

Awww...his parents were with him too.

Unrealistic expectations or not, I thought Michael deserved to win.

Manuela said...

no i dont want to believe ...how did they dare...no way.damn i just can imagine how he wants leave all this sh*** and change occupation. sucks. im not upset im destroyed

Manuela said...

does it mean Cloo ll take oscar? oh yes im pretty sure

Anonymous said...

One day Michael will be the frontrunner that all the trends point towards winning, and on that day we will celebrate.

Anonymous said...

Manuela: I am happy that Dujardin won because now Clooney has a SERIOUS competitor.

Dujardin: SAG and BAFTA winner
Clooney: BFCA and Globes winner

It's a fifty/fifty chance between them now, when before Clooney was the clear front-runner.

Flora said...

Ah well, at least he can go home to Hackney and sleep now. No more flights and tuxes and red carpets for a while. I hope he gets to take a nice long holiday too, he bloody well deserves it.

Anonymous said...

Or there may be more pre-production for 12YAS in Atlanta. I still hope he gets some rest, though.

Simone said...

I think Michael thrives in being busy. He'll be back to business as usual, probably tomorrow.

Thank God for IFTA!

Anonymous said...

I would have preferred Gary if not Michael. But...Michael sort of won tonight too. He did produce Pitch Black Heist. I'd love to see that.

Anonymous said...

Durjardin won a Globe as well, just in the Musical/Comedy category.

I think he's got the Oscar locked up, actually.

emmy said...

Really SHAME on BAFTAS !!! Jean Dujardin ? WTF ?!!! PPFFFFFFF

Simone said...

At least BAFTA nominated Michael. Don't forget that.

Anonymous said...

How many people here have actually seen The Artist and Dujardin's performance in it?

Simone said...

I've seen it twice. The first time was at TIFF, with a Q&A with Jean and co-stars afterwards. I knew this was the film and performance to watch throughout the awards season. He won the Cannes Best Actor back in May.

MLM said...

Dujardin's win was predictable. You don't have to be jaded to think so. He's in a feel-good movie about Hollywood, about an actor who falls from grace (this time from hubris not alcohol or drug addiction) and finds redemption through the love a good woman. Hollywood loves this kind of recycled Hollywood on Hollywood stories--it makes them feel good about themselves. Dujardin also has Weinstein backing him up. "The Artist" to me is last year's "The King's Speech"--admirable but "meh" in a lot of ways.

Fassy sure looks good in fancy dress.

Ranelle said...

I'm watching the telecast now.

In the first 10 minutes, the camera showed Michael once, there were 2 brief clips of him in the year's overview of films, from Shame and Jane Eyre, and Michael was mentioned on the red carpet and by Cuba Gooding Jr on stage.
BAFTA >>> Golden Globes

Well worth watching!

Anonymous said...

"The Artist" to me is last year's "The King's Speech"--admirable but "meh" in a lot of ways.

Totally agreed. The Artist was a solid little film, but ultimately a trifle. Dujardin's performance WAS excellent, though (just like Firth's).

Ranelle: Thanks for the info! Glad to know Michael is actually getting screen time.

After the broadcast, they showed more winners, including for Best Short- "Pitch Black Heist." Michael and Steve McQueen were so excited and they showed a clip of the short!! Really cute.

dshultz said...

I saw The Artist, and I though that it was a good film made great by the leading man's performance. Without Jean Dujardin in the main role, the movie would've been a lovable little film hearkening back to old Hollywood, but Dujardin elevated it to a whole other level. So I think he deserved it. But not as much as Michael did.

Anonymous said...

I loved Michael's & his parent's reactions when Pitch Black Heist won for Best Short. They were so proud.

Now I see where Michael gets his looks. His mother, Adele, is quite beautiful and his father, Josef, looks like a sweet guy. They have two very accomplished children and are probably very proud. It's nice to see that Michael has very supportive parents and that he is close to them. I think this is why he is so fun, confident, and relaxed in real life and doesn't have any of that angst or self-destructive personality.
