The Counselor

Deadline confirmed earlier today that Michael Fassbender is all set to work with Ridley Scott again, on an original screenplay of Cormac McCarthy's 'The Counselor'! Michael's name gets tossed about in early talks for a lot of upcoming films, so it's good to hear that a really hot casting rumor turned out to be true - after so many let downs!

The synopsis is about a respected lawyer (Michael) who thinks he can dip a toe in to the drug business without getting sucked down. It is a bad decision and he tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation. So now that we know Michael will play the way ward lawyer, there is a really bad guy role that needs to get filled, and the name Jeremy Renner has been tossed into speculation discussions. Now I don't know about you guys, but I really like Jeremy and he can play an asshole like no body's business. And the man said he can't wait to work with Michael as they have the same agent. So let's start crossing those fingers and toes for a Fassy/Renner match up!

As I learned in the comment section, the May start date filming of Counselor will not affect the filming of 'Twelve Years', which will start in late summer.

Once again, Michael is proving that he IS the new Hollywood man that everyone wants to hire. If we thought 2011 was Michael's year, 2012-2013 is going to blow us away!

More detail about the highly sought-after spec script here: http://scriptshadow.blogspot.com/2012/02/screenplay-review-counselor-return-of.html

Malkina is the one we ought to be paying attention to. A native of Buenos Aires, we notice the Egyptian cat tattooed on her brown skin. She’s sexy, possessing a Moriarty-like intelligence so cunning even her beau, Reiner, is terrified of her. Another important note about Malkina is that she knows her way around technology, around computers. She might also be quite mad. Perhaps we’re supposed to think she makes Lisbeth Salander seem like a Disney princess in comparison.... On another level, according to the finale, I saw The Counselor as a woman’s revenge story, a femme fatale fuck-you to all the violence done against women in Juarez, Mexico. The Counselor is kind of like the Cormac McCarthy version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

OMG what an opening sequence!

This is the tale of the Counselor, a man, who when we first meet him, is in bed with the love of his life, Laura. We see him in Amsterdam, in a jeweler’s shop, procuring the perfect diamond for his bride to be. We’re treated to a philosophical and prophetic lesson from the Dealer. He tells the Counselor the Jewish civilization is the only true civilization, and that any country that has driven the Jews out has never been the same. He waxes a McCarthy monologue about the one true God, who is immovable, and tells us that stones are the true witnesses since they’ve been around since the beginning. When the Counselor picks out his diamond for Laura, the Dealer says, “This is a cautionary stone. You will see."

It's possible; apparently they have the same agent.

Nice! All these wonderful projects lined up, I'm pleased that this won't interfere with 12 Years.

That's really great news ! I'm so exciting for this project !!! =D

I read a good number of Cormac McCarthy's books (including All The Pretty Horses and every book in The Border Trilogy) before they started being adapted to the big screen.

I'm going to resist reading this spec script when it inevitably makes it online because I want to be completely unaware when I see it in the theatre for the first time. It's not something I often get to do with McCarthy's work.

Same here anon, I'm going to steer clear of spoilery scripts because I want to see the movie with fresh eyes and ears.

What a wonderful message, 12 years, Cuchulain, and now is what else interesting in taking part in this year, maybe X-Mmen.

Manuel's something I feel that this year will have maybe a few days holiday breaks but not as long as in that year.

Simone also so I do not read any spoilery scripts before the movie is better then watching experience

I KNOW Michael will be excellent! Can't wait!

I wonder who will be cast as the very cool sounding Malkina? Zoe Saldana I think would be a great choice!

Anonymous said...

Yes! Or Noomi Rapace (Prometheus reunion!).

Simone said...

Zoe could play the wife. Noomi as the evil lady... I like that idea. Or Marina Baccarin, she was in the tv series V as the evil alien lizard queen. She's Brazilian and gorgeous.

Dammit, I should be a casting agent! :-)

A new project?

Michael is going to be busy this year. I'm glad that that everyone wants to hire him in their movie.

And Jeremy Renner as well, I'll definitely watch this movie!

Those female roles will be among the most sought-after in Hollywood. I really have no casting criteria other than they should be REMARKABLE actresses able to handle their own opposite Michael and do Cormac's writing justice.

Simone said...

I just don't want big name big star females. Sometimes productions can get too diluted with star power by having too many egos in the pot. I'm a selfish Fassinator and I don't want any actresses coming on board with a lot of tabloid drama because her name will try to overshadow Michael's and I will not be cool with that. I just want a great actress, the lesser known and potent, the better.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely agreed, Simone. Give me a talented, no-name actress over a star any day.

Oh that they did not give this to Twilight somehow I do not like her.

if i understand right Pitt is being considered. please dont mr. Scott. Pitt is just following fassy in every project)i dont care about spoilers (i hate waiting) final movie is always exciting even if we know some details but i think it s more fair give a link for script or whatever and if somebody wants...anyway im happy more films for Michael!

Pitt talked up Michael big time in Hollywood after they were in Basterds together, so I have no problem with Michael continuing to nurture a good working relationship with Pitt. It has only benefitted him so far.

Anonymous said...

I have no qualms with Pitt either, but I personally think Renner would be a better choice to play a villain, especially considering the inevitable comparisons that will be made to Bardem's STUNNING performance in No Country for Old Men.

They have to cast Catalina Sandino Moreno (remember her brilliant performance in "Maria Full of Grace"?) as Malkina!

TDC said...

It's official. Fassbender's the hardest working man in Hollywood. I like to see lesser-known talents working along with Fassbender too since it's tough to match him. You don't want some big star who's known more so for being famous than they are skilled because that kills the film. Putting the Counselor on my list of must sees.

I just heard about this, I'm so happy! Fassy just can't seem to stop, can he? His great work ethic is terrific for us fans, isn't it?

Guys, this script was SO sought after. In fact, it's gone from draft to acquisition to casting in one of the fastest turn-around times in recent memory; THAT'S how hot the industry is for it.

The fact that Michael got cast in the primary male role is a HUGE deal.

On the money about the speed in which the movie gods aligned screenwriter, director, and lead male actor to this project. The fact that this is McCarthy's first spec script made it even more desirable and interesting.

I just hope they get it right with the rest of the cast. Since both director and screenwriter are such marquee names, they don't need a "big" Hollywood stars for this project.

Ales said...

nothing remains for us not to wait, maybe the director will take pity and tell who will play female roles

Michael is at a point in his career that in regards to this project, he probably has the power to assist in the hiring of his co-stars. The speed in which this came together, his starring role is probably just one of several incentives. Very impressed with how far our boy has come.

Wouldn't it be great if he suggested Nicole Behare for a role? I was SO impressed with her in Shame, even though she had such little screen time.

Anonymous said...

I think we can take this casting news as proof that Scott LOVED Michael's performance in "Prometheus". I'm really, really interested to see that film. The original "Alien" was more of a psychological thriller that relied on writing and acting than your typical sci-fi film of today.

Ales said...

Anonymous 7.30 AM I'm sorry but this lady did not like ( Nicole Behare )

I just saw on Tumblr that someone from Popsugar is planning to meet/interview Michael tonight, and she's based in LA. I'm guessing he's there...

... Oscars are tomorrow.

Ales said...

where Tumblr???? If this is true it will be well pleased to hear his voice again and laughter :)

Sorry, I meant Twitter (NOT Tumblr): https://twitter.com/#!/alliemerriam/status/172801659511123969

(And the Oscars are obviously the day after tomorrow. I must have been half asleep in my post above.)

I can not add a comment in a note after that so I'll add here.

So searched the neta and the addition of these sites you entered did not see anywhere else on this entry if Fass and Nicole were spotted together. Second is the famous so if there was he would have seen him more. Thirdly, as I remember not long ago combined it with his ex, and so far there are no pictures and a lot of people saw it. Fourth, know each other since March and now suddenly they saw together (previously combined it with her and other actresses)

For as long than the pictures can not believe I see, with the rest of Michael himself said that he has no time for love.

Simone does not have what to be annoyed and block comments, because you will appear a comment about the alleged dating or meetings, Fassa, shaking just ignore them
