Casting News on The Counselor

When I first wrote about Michael's hot new project The Counselor, there was speculation about who his hot co-stars would be. So far, it appears that Natalie Portman is at the top of the list to play Laura. I'm fine with Natalie, but she's a big name and I was hoping for someone lesser known, but Ridley Scott has a movie to sell and he wants an A-lister for his female lead. And it appears that Jeremy Renner (fingers still crossed) and Javier Bardem are the only two actors that Scott is in talks with - so one of them will be cast surely. So now the next big rumor talks should focus on Malinka and her scummy man friend who lures the counselor into the drug world.

From Twitchnews, here is what they report: Stories began circulating in February that Javier Bardem, Jeremy Renner and Brad Pitt had all expressed an interest in playing the role of Reiner - the villain of the piece - and Twitch has learned that Bardem and Renner are both having preliminary conversations with producers about the part. It would appear that Pitt is out of the running and we are told that Bardem - who has already proven that McCarthy's style fits him like a glove with his part in No Country For Old Men - is Scott's preferred choice. Barring a major schedule issue expect Reiner to be one of these two men.

Further, Natalie Portman is in early discussions to take on the role of Laura - the female lead of the film. Portman has chosen to keep a low profile of late, preferring to spend time with her family, but obviously this part is juicy enough to entice her back to work. Portman is also said to be Scott's leading choice for the part.

None of these conversations have led to formal offers as of yet but - as was the case with Fassbender - when it gets to that stage it's going to happen very, very fast.

Last night was the Genie awards in Toronto, and as I speculated, Michael did not attend, nor did he win for Best Actor in 'A Dangerous Method'. However, his co-star Viggo Mortensen won for Best Supporting Actor, and that was a nice win for him. I know I have not discussed 'Method' nearly as much as I did about 'Shame' and Michael's other films of 2011. It was a very slow film for me, but I look forward to viewing it again when it's available on Netflix. Perhaps I'll be in a better frame of mind and relaxed to enjoy it.

And speaking of Netflix, the next DVD in the top spot of my queue is Murphy's Law, that BBC cop TV show from 2003-2005 which features Michael as a bad ass in the third season. Although I write for FF and appear to know a lot about Michael's career and activities, I take pride in the knowledge that I have not seen everything he has been in, and Murphy's Law is proof of that! I never had the interest to just jump head first into anything and everything Michael has been in. Along with having many other interests... I simply want to pace myself in being exposed to all his work. And without minding my Netflix queue lately, Murphy's Law, which has been in my queue for a very long time, gradually moved up to the top spot, and the time is now for me to watch it. So now I'll be able to see what those Caz gifs at tumblr are all about, see for myself what the context of the gifs are about. And I know I could see the Fassy clips of Caz at Youtube, but no, that's not good enough! I want the full context... I want to see the entire program. To appreciate Michael's work, I believe you have to watch the whole damn thing. Just like, back in October/November, I finally saw all of The Band of Brothers, and even though Michael's screen time in the entire series was less than 20 minutes, I loved the entire mini-series. So, the next thing is Murphy's Law and I'm excited.  Are there movies and TV shows of Michael that you have yet to see?

I don't mind Natalie in the smaller female role... I just don't want them to cast a huge name as Malkina. That character needs to be cast from talent alone, IMHO.

I absolutely agree... Malinka has to be pure talent and convey wickedness like breathing.

I like Natalie Portman as Laura. She is a great actress. I always wanted to see Michael and her together in a film.

BTW both Bardem and Renner can end up in a film, considering that there are two big supporting roles for male actors in the script. Somehow everybody focuses on just one and for whatever reason they describe him in a rather wrong way.

As for Malkina I don't care if the actress is a big star or completely unknown, as long as she is talented and can pull off the role and not make her look like a caricature.

Mark my words: Renner will be cast as Reiner and Bardem will be Westray.

Michael's role as Caz in Murphy's Law is unforgettable. I saw it a couple of weeks ago in its entirety on Youtube. It was a side of Michael I have not seen before, believe me you will not be disappointed with his performance, in fact you would be wanting to see more of him as Caz. Nobody plays a bad boy like Michael Fassbender ;)

Thanks for the feedback Katerina about Michael as Caz. I am delightfully ignorant as to what his character is all about, besides being a bad boy, and I want to enjoy the entire series by watching it in Dolby Surround sound audio and on a 30-inch screen tv. :D

Not really thrilled about Natalie or Renner to be honest. Either way Michael's going to be great, and that's all that matters to me.

Renner has the same agent as Michael do I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are both attached to this project.

Thank you Katerina 9:26 :) bc this series will never get in my country.

What's your country, Marcia? I tried to watch Murphy's Law on U tube but without some French subtitles, it was hard for me to understand everything...BTW, can someone tell me if this guy Ferguson was making fun of Michael with his joke about the I Pad or not? Thank you!

Craig has mentioned Michael before (in his interview with Daniel Radcliffe). He's definitely a fan.

Oh Émilie, i think just now, reading your comment again, i understood that you want the series with french subs? Sorry this link doesn't have it :(

I agree with Dionne- I'm not OH MY GOD! excited to hear Natalie Portman or Jeremy Renner and Javier Bardem may be cast alongside MF (although they are all good actors).

My casting would be:

THE WIFE: Liv Tyler, Emily Blunt, Gemma Arterton, Rachel McAdams. Given her part isn't the hugest, she doesn't have to be a HUGE Hollywood name.

MALKINA: Zoe Saldana (she is just badass in Colombiana and The Losers) or Olga Kurylenko (she was in Centurion with MF as a badass warrior woman).

REINER: Edward Norton (Norton can play a racist like nobody: American History X and sexist: The Italian Job remake). But Joaquin Phoenix could be great as you said Simone.

WESTRAY: Nicolas Cage. He just IS enigmatic. He's usually quirky but he can play strong characters amazingly when he wants to.
Mark Strong again as you said Simone, would be good.

I think to make this movie be big, big names (who can act!) have to join alongside Michael. Because how the casting looks now, he is the only reason I'd go see it.

I don't know if Saldana has the acting chops, and Olga definitely doesn't. Nicholas Cage has become a parody of himself in recent years. Norton is more deserving of a "come back".

I like Indiewire's casting choices the best.

I dont like Nathalie Portman. dont think she is a good actress. but i love Renner , i would love to see him in a movie with Michael. the amount of pranks on the set, they will drive Scott crazy, but in a good way...

Natalie is one of those actors who is only as good as their director. She was great under Aronofsky, but HORRIFIC under Lucas. Hopefully Ridley will bring out the best in her.

I agree that Renner is massively underrated. He was great in the Hurt Locker and was the best thing about MI4.

Sidra I like your suggestionto the actors Simone is also, though Natalie also fits in the role of Laura. I like this actress. There are so many good actors that they do not know who to choose: P

I love Natalie Portman so that would be great for me =)

As for your last question, I haven't seen yet Murhy's law, The Devil's whore, Hercule Poirot, Charles Bravo and some other tv role of Fassy ...
I'm just looking forward to see them =D (Especially the period dramas ;) )

Here in Hong Kong, we still have not shown Shame nor A Dangerous Method, I'm awaiting the blue ray release day, so I can reserve them from HMV.

I hope we will have the Counselor shown in hk, exciting cast, I love Natalie Portman too !!!

Here in France, we're still waiting for Jane Eyre to be shown in theatres!

Ales said...

emmy I love Hercule Poirot and I did not know that Michael appeared in one episode, Mother, how could I overlook this section.

Which TV series starred Michael?

Anonymous said...

Ales, Michael's episode in Poirot is "After the Funeral"- 2006

I really hope Michael is featured prominently in the Prometheus trailer set to debut this Saturday. Apparently he and Charlize are set to be doing an online Q&A through Yahoo!Movies that same day...

Simone said...

That Q&A will be on Saturday? St. Patty's day?

émilie said...

Some of the questions people ask are completely crazy. At least 5 women ask Michael to marry them. There are some serious questions but I would have expected more of them!

Anonymous said...

Simone: apparently so. Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof (the screenwriter) are doing a live stream Q&A that same day, through AMC theatres. March 17th is a big marketing day for Prometheus.

Simone said...

Thanks.

Well, I'll miss out on it because after the past 6 days, and I'm still writing my damn papers, I'll be drinking up a storm on St. Patty's day, then putting the finishing touches on Plan B all day Sunday so I can mail that bad boy on Monday.

Ales said...

Well at last began to promote Prometheus, it will be more of fresh photos and movies with Michael :)

emilie
Only five women a little less, and this is where you saw the proposal??

émilie said...

Ales , the questions to Michael and Charlize can be seen here:http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/prometheus/

There are definitely some mind-numbingly stupid questions there... but a few good ones as well. I hope they ask the good ones. LOL
