Michael is reaching the summit in 'The Mountain Between Us'

This is Breaking News per Variety! Michael is yet to star in another high-profile project!

Michael Fassbender climbs Fox's 'Mountain'

20th Century Fox drama helmed by Gerardo Naranjo

By Jeff Sneider, Justin Kroll

"X-Men: First Class" and "Prometheus" star Michael Fassbender may be staying in business with 20th Century Fox, as he's in early talks to topline Gerardo Naranjo's romantic drama "The Mountain Between Us."

Based on the novel by Charles Martin, story follows two strangers who survive a plane crash in the Colorado woods and are forced to rely on one another for survival, eventually falling in love.
If a deal comes together Fassbender would play Ben Trace, a doctor and avid climber who uses his skills to transport an injured writer named Ashley down a mountain in harsh weather.

Scribe J. Mills Goodloe adapted the novel, and Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark and Jenno Topping will produce for Chernin Entertainment.

Naranjo, who previously directed the Mexican thriller "Miss Bala," will make his studio debut with "Mountain Between Us."

Fassbender is currently preparing to star in Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," and he's also scheduled to reunite with his "Shame" helmer Steve McQueen on the drama "Twelve Years a Slave," which Brad Pitt is producing through his Plan B banner. Fassbender, who's repped by CAA, will next appear in Scott's sci-fi epic "Prometheus," which 20th Century Fox opens June 8.

Not as many big names as some of his other more recent projects. I wouldn't be broken up if he bypassed this for a better opportunity, unless the script is absolutely stellar...

Then again, this could cement him as a romantic leading man.... I guess it all depends on how he wants to brand himself.

I know I broke a 'new' unwritten "guideline" in posting this, but I do like the idea of 'Mountain' and I hope he takes it on. No other big names have been listed because it's in the early stages, we'll soon know if it's just wishful thinking of Fox to have the chance to promote a Fassbender film... again.

I mean big names in terms of development (screenwriter, director), not other actors... but I'll retain an open mind until I hear more.

Based on the performance of 'John Carter', big names don't always guarantee quality. And since this project doesn't have 'big names", I'm glad that Michael is still interested in these small prizes.

I'd be happy with names I'm familiar with so that I could vet the quality of their past work.

(Who knows, maybe this will be his "English Patient"...)

You can start vetting Gerardo Naranjo's work right here with Miss Bala.

Michael does not sleep, he's a robot!... The script must be really good for Michael to sign on.

First, as I went on this blog thought we'd scared that something had happened to Michael, but fortunately it is only news about the possibility of filming a new movie starring Michael. My next brilliant idea while reading was the "mountain" and "journey" "fall in love," which is another Brokeback Mountain.Reading the comments I read that there will also be playing a woman. About this time my brain begging for rest

Naranjo has been nominated several times in various festivals for a few years. I haven't seen his movies but Miss Bala seems quite good. And I'm confident in Michael, he has proved so far that he knew how to lead his career in the most intelligent way.

Forget about the names involved, this plot sounds so contrived. :/

Hopefully it's more complex than that...

Do you guys think a romantic film will be good for him? I have my doubts...

Gigi said...

Marcia, I too I'm a little wary about romantic films (I feel like they are not the best route to go for an actor trying to establish themselves), but since we know just the basic story and the film is in it's initial stage, maybe there's more to the story than we know. Michael has made great choices in films so far, so we will see =)

Michael play on 100% in this movie???

Simone said...

Michael hasn't signed on yet.

And this is not the romance kind of film you're thinking of. For cripe sakes, they will crash into a mountain, the girl is hurt and messed up, and Michael will help get them out of the mountains. Meanwhile, they fall for each other. But don't be expecting a candlelight dinner with wine and Bach in the woods... they are trying to save their lives --- after surviving a plane crash.

Heck, if anything, a romance themed film with Michael in it, with drama... this has it. Try to withhold judgement until a) he signs, b) we know more about the plot. Better yet... go read the book.

It sounds like Hollywood is quickly running out of "meet cute" scenarios for romantic pairings.

Here's just a tad bit more info from Playlist:

Fassbender will now take the lead in "Miss Bala" director Gerardo Naranjo's English-language debut, "The Mountain Between Us." The script, by J. Mills Goodloe, is based on the novel by Charles Martin, and tells the story of Ashley, a writer heading east for her wedding who meets Ben, a doctor. When their flight is cancelled, the two charter a flight only to have that plane's pilot suffer a heart attack. The plane crashes into a mountain and so the two fight the elements and their injuries to return to civilization, and, of course, fall in love with each other.

No word yet on when this would shoot but we're guessing sometime in the late summer or early fall. Fassbender continues to mix it up with tenptoles ("X-Men: First Class," "Prometheus"), indie/arthouse fare ("Shame," "The Counselor") and now, we're guessing one for the ladies (this sounds like the kind of rugged romance we're going to have to take our girlfriends to). That being said, with the wickedly inventive Naranjo behind the camera, this could upset any expectations we might have from the logline. Either way, more Fassy is always a good thing.

Jesus, can't we just wait & see more about this before critiziing it?

I have not already signed a big noise, I have nothing to romantic comedy and, if Michael wants in this game is I can not help it, do not know what the scenario, we do not know if at all find time and maybe got some other proposal and wonders.

I just received a vision from 2014, where Michael Fassbender won the best actor Oscar for the film Vincent, where he played Vincent van Gogh. So happy right now...

emmy said...

That sounds excellent =)

Anonymous said...

I had a recent dream that he won the Oscar for playing Thomas Jefferson (who was tall, handsome, a ginger, and spoke flawless French).

I think the success of this project will hinge on who they cast as the female lead. It will have to be someone who can portray a poweful, strong-willed heroine.

Anonymous said...

Zzzz, I hope Michael passes on this one. Let Ryan G. do it, Michael already has great projects lined up... Not into love stories, no matter how atypical this one sounds.

Sidra said...

I'm loving the storyline! I really hope he takes it on :)

Oooh, apparently "Wolf of Wallstreet" has been announced as Scorsese's next film. Remember when Michael said in that recent Hollywood Reporter cover story that he was in talks with Scorsese about a role he couldnt reveal? I hope it's this...

Simone said...

Nope. Leo D is Scorsese's 'muse' and he's all over like that like a cornered nun.

Michael's not above taking a supporting role in a prestige project, IMHO.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Michael's going to be supporting to Ejiofer in Twelve Years a Slave. He has no problem with it.

Ales said...

Playing with Scorsese that is something, so if I had to chose I would advise Michael "Wolf of Wallstreet" even a Supporting Role.

Anonymous said...

I'm with you, Ales. I'd take Michael in a DiCaprio/Scorsese film over a romance with a lesser known director any day of the week.

Simone said...

You guys need to calm down with creating rumors that Michael will be in this Scorsese film - some people have posted it as a fact at tumblr.

There is a big difference between fact and wishful thinking. Take a moment to just focus on the current newstory of 'Mountain'.

If Michael is being considered for this wall street movie, it'll be announced appropriately. He can't be in everything!

Some "photos" have turned up today of Michael and before everyone and their brother go completely insane please just stop and think, okay.

1) Firstly these "photo's" prove absolutely nothing

And

2) The body language is completely off sync and awkward.

Anonymous said...

Pictures of what?

Anonymous said...

Michael and someone where not supposed to mention. But there's no "Shame" in it. I didn't think the body language was awkward at all. I thought they looked cute.

And Michael can definitely rock the turtleneck.

Anonymous said...

oops, I meant "we're"

Why aren't we supposed to mention Nicole? She's awesome.. It's pretty obvious that they're dating. Hi hand is around her shoulders.

Oh, and Simone, Tumblr mentioned that Scorsese film because the Playlist (Indiewire) specifically mentioned Michael as a possibility because of his Hollywood Reporter interview.

Simone said...

I just reblogged the Michael and Nicole pix at tumblr. They look groovy together.

Simone said...

I just don't want talk about his private life becoming a mainstay here at FF. I adore Nicole and I always thought it would be nice if they were seeing each other in the real world. These pictures at tumblr prove it.

Since I'm in lockdown mode at college due to a Tornado watch. I'll post a pic or two.
