BREAKING NEWS: The Counselor - Pitt, Jolie, Bardem & Fassy!

Per Deadline:

Ridley Scott Drafts Brad Pitt And Javier Bardem For ‘The Counselor,’ With Angelina Jolie And Fox Circling

EXCLUSIVE: Back in February, Deadline revealed that Ridley Scott was aiming high for a nemesis to play alongside Michael Fassbender in The Counselor, with Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem on the wish list. I’m told now that Scott is on the verge of getting both actors into the movie, and that Angelina Jolie is in discussions to play the female lead. They’re all in talks for a film that starts production late June. Fox is negotiating to distribute, which was expected because of Scott Free’s first look deal that gave the studio first crack at the package. If all this works out, I can’t imagine Fox lets this one get away.

It has been a charmed fast track for this project ever since it was first shown to producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz, who adapted McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Road. They took McCarthy’s first spec script off the market quickly. Scott sparked to it and agreed to make it his next film after Prometheus, and he soon had that scifi film’s star, Fassbender, aboard to play the title role of a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting sucked down. It is a bad decision and he tries to hang on to survive it. It has been called No Country For Old Men on steroids.

Bardem won the Academy Award for playing the villain in that movie, and Pitt, who is in discussions to play a character named West Ray, would re-team with Scott for the first time since that director launched his career in Thelma & Louise. Scott and Jolie have been collaborating on a biopic of Gertrude Bell, and that led to discussions about The Counselor. It also helps that she and Pitt can be in the same proximity, as they generally don’t work at the same time.

Great news! This project is very exciting!Bardem was very impressive in "No country for old men", no doubt the fictional encounter between Michael and him will be breathtaking!

Simone, since the film has two main female characters,I dont think Natalie Portman is still out.Wow!!Michael,Natalie Portman,Javier Bardem,Angelina Jolie,Brad Pitt..talk about star power!!

Ok, I get that Bardem is the villian, but what's Pitt's role?

Also, would Angelina be Laura or Malkina? She doesn't fit the description for either so I'm a bit confused.

Either way, there's going to be a lot of talent in this film! Can't wait.

im not exciting about Jolie-Pitt in Scott`s project. she isnt great actress and i dont see Pitt`s part as well. big names of course but there are a lot other great actors. Bardem will be perfect villian. im happy bcs Fassy got another Scott`s project, love this director)

Hurmmmm... well, Pitt and Fassy had a lot of chemistry is their short shared screen time in Inglourious Basterds, so I'm ok with that. But Jolie? Well, I'm sure it'll still be great.

mmm im still sure Pitt wasnt perfect choice for Tarantino`s IB. anyway of course im waiting for greatest perfomances))))

Nobody is a real villian in the script, neither character played by Bardem, nor by Pitt. At least they are not the kind of villians people seem to imagine them.

Ideally I wanted up and coming actors working with Michael on this project. But Hollywood demands other A-listers to be associated with this film. So that's why I'm excited at the prospect of Angelina Jolie, in particular, because in like her very much. I tolerate Brad, and Javier is cool too.

Twentienth Century Fox is not going to mess this hot project up and leave it in the hands of anyone who is not a solid A-lister. With Michael being granted the LEAD acting role, it says so much about their faith in him... but it also comes with a caveat - the film also will be featuring Oscar winning actors (Jolie and Bardem) and an Oscar nominated A+ list leading man. If this film is going to be 'No Country/Men' on steroids, the producers want strong and well known actors who will help Michael blow this movie out of the ball park.

I'm sure confirmation of Jolie will be made shortly, along with who will be Marlinka.

Oh ok, I see! I'm happy with Bardem and Jolie, I'll reserve judgement with Pitt. I'm sure with the director, everyone's going to bring their A game.

I'm SO HAPPY for Angelina Jolie ! She is a great actress =))

Is Natalie Portman confirmed or it's just a rumor ??

Dionne said...

@ emmy me too! Of course I'm happy for Fassy, but Angie is one of my favs. I hope she shines like she used to when she did Indie's.

oh, wait, I'm sorry, I just watched "Changeling", and I was totally blown away by Jolie's performance! I don't know what kind of character her's will be here, but I now know she's quite capable of heavy stuff!

Brangelina just announced their engagement and I think it's wonderful news. I've watched them since the very beginning of their relationship and always supported them. Apparently they are very happy and I wish them the best.

In any event, along with this news, I think them working together on The Counselor will be even more convenient for them.

I wonder if Michael will get an invitation to their wedding, that would be awesome for him!

Great news all around, congrats Brangelina.

Sorry, but I'm disappointed by the direction of casting for this film.

Too many high-profiled names and it becomes a Tarantino trailer--heavy on star-power and cleverness.

I thought the names Cormac McCarthy and Ridley Scott was star-power enough. The fact that these two old salts are teaming up with the most electrifying young actor to come on the scene in last 25 years was enough to get any cinéaste drooling, but now to add Pitt-Jolie just killed the edge-factor. It is now a hip "Hollywood" vehicle.

As much as I admire Jolie and Pitt as people, sometimes their acting and vocal deliveries make my butt clench in embarrassment.

Simone said...

I completely understand where you're coming from MLM. I prefer an unknown cast, but in Hollywood, money and A-list names talk.

I cringe already at tabloid talk during production of this film that will talk about B and A's MOVIE while the morons totally ignore Fassy. And Javier has already been in a McCarthy film as a villain and won an Oscar for it. Why is hollywood scared of using unknowns and B list actors is beyond me.

I dunno, if I ran Hollywood, things would be very, very different.I guess I don't harbor too much resentment because I like B and A... but I don't want them to overshadow Michael, this is HIS movie.

Jesus people get over it. If you don't like the casting, and/or don't trust the director... you make a film and do better. No one's going to overshadow Michael's performance, because he's a great actor. I don't know about Pitt, it's hit or miss. (But really he must have shown himself worthy, or he wouldn't have been chosen). I think Javier Bardem and Angelina Jolie will kill it per usual. If it's any consolation Angelina's part is small and I'm sure The Counselor will exceed your low expectations of the actors and the director.

OT: Looks like Michael's going to play the evil slave master in '12 Years', can't wait.

Simone said...

^ Chillout anon. Everyone is entitled to an opinion w/o being oppressed ok. I know I'm sure as hell excited about seeing The Counselor whoever else is in it.

And yes, I when we learn more, we will discuss 'Twelve Years' as I read that Michael will get the part of the evil slave owner. That is going to kick ass, and I think it'll be the first role Michael will play where we'll hate his guts.

I like Jolie and Pitt, i always watch thier films and enjoy Jolie's action movies very much, my only concern is that their names may overshadow Michael's (same as you Simone).
He was a bad guy in Jonah Hex, Simone, although not in the leading name.

I have a strong intuition that Michael will not be overshadowed by his costars, instead it only brings further support in his capabilities to shine as an exceptional actor. It goes to show that everyone wants a piece of him !
