Trying to get Motivated for Malick (Updated!)

I don't know about you guys, but to me, something is off in regards to my interest in this Malick film that Fassy is currently filming down in Austin, TX. Unlike all his other films that have been announced and throughout the filming productions, we knew a relative amount of information about what the film is about, the TITLE of the film, the type of character Michael is playing... you know, the usual stuff. But according to IndieWire, all everyone seems to know is the film follows two intersecting love triangles and is a story of sexual obsession and betrayal set against Austin's vibrant and colorful music scene. Ok... wow. Is Fassy going to get his sex on again ala Shame?

Also, a lot of people are aware of Malick's fondness for cutting people out of his films, but I really think it's very safe to say that Michael will be a strong feature in the film. Now, he may not be a pivotal character, and he is not the lead, but I think based on the images we have seen of him filming, he is with the other key characters of the film, so, one can assume Michael will be in a great portion of the film. But yet... there is just something lacking this time around: my interest in this project. I feel a disconnect of interest to the film. The blond Natalie Portman looks odd and forced, and I am very lukewarm to Rooney Mara, I just completely fail to see her appeal (even though I did see her version of 'Dragon Tattoo' a few weeks back), and I like Ryan Gosling when he's playing weird guys - it just seems natural for him - and I don't know if his character is 'weird' in this one or not. I dunno, I just hate this lingering feeling that this may not jive with me. Am I the only one feeling this way?

But oh well, I'll still take Fassy anyway I can get him, and I'm sure you agree with me.

Updated: Earlier this morning, FF reader Meredith emailed me her Fassy filming report from Austin. I waited to hear back from her to get approval to post her email and pics. Thanks Meredith!

Hey Simone,

Love your site! I'm a big fassy fan and saw him today filming with Natalie portman outside my local grocer here in Austin. Wish I could have gotten a pic but the production assts were asking us to get out of the camera's field of vision. They were filming Michael and natalie getting into a red Maserati. I was less than 100 feet away. Can't believe it i was so close and yet so far. anyway, thought i'd share the sighting with you.

One more case it's of interest. They were filming at this restaurant:
and next door there's a grocer called Fresh Plus. When I saw them, they were filming in the lot next to Fresh Plus. My friend who called to let me know they were there saw them coming in and out of Asti, too.

I'm not feeling this either, I don't know if it's because of the lack of information or the fear that he might not be on the movie at all. But at least for me is still exciting to see him working with Ryan Gosling.

No Simone you're not alone in your feelings about this project. To me it this project occurs as student project. You starts with a good idea, and the projects is getting bigger and bigger and the story gets out of hand. That's how I see it. I've read Malick was doing pre production work for this a year ago so I think he has the bigger picture. But it's really strange that there is so little known about this film and that there is still no new info about it.
Michael feel the urge to take this part after filming TYAS and The Counselor and with his busy schedule so I think that his role is worth it. I believe in his capability to choose the right roles...hopefully I (or we) will not be dissapointed in that believe.

I think it would be interesting to see both Michael Fassbender & Ryan Gosling together in a feature... Both are so unique in their acting abilities, and would set a great tone for one another during the film. I can't wait for my details on this film.. I just don't like all the secrecy ! lol

Whew! I'm glad I'm not alone. In any event, whether this unknown film is going to be interesting or good or not, the year 2013 is going to be very exciting for Fassinators. He has so many films coming out and film productions in the pipeline. Fassy can afford one funky film that may not give us the warm fuzzies, it's cool, there is so much more to look forward to.

I don't really know what to think of the film (we have little info.) but I think Michael makes wise choices so I will have to trust him. Even though I don't know what to think of Malik

@Simone, just knowing that Fassy, Gosling and Bale will possibly share screen time gives me the *warm fuzzies* lol

P.S. Thanks for sharing Meredith!

I'm more excited about this than I am for The Counselor (terrible script, terrible part), X-Men:FC (I'm sure it will be fun--and that's it), Assassin's Creed (paycheck), and Twelve Years a Slave (I have high hopes for it as a film, but based on what I've heard/read, his character has little depth). Frank and Jane Got a Gun are my most anticipated because they're genre/role departures for him. This untitled Malick project falls smack in the middle. I'm excited because of the collaborators and the setting, but who knows what the slant on the subject will be?

One thing is certain though. This is a career feather in his cap. Working with respected auteurs will do more for him than anything else.

I'm not a fan of Malick's work (a bit overrated I reckon). I'm waiting for the day he'll be in a Gus Van Sant's or Lars Von Trier's movie! But he looks great, and I'm confident in his choices!

And thanks Meredith! I can't imagine how I would feel if he was in my neighbourhood for a movie! You're very lucky!

I am not excited either. And not only because Malick tends to cut actors out of the film, but because his films are rather difficult to take in. I struggled with The Tree of Life but did not last long. And it was reported that his latest film was not the easiest piece of work to understand both by the critics and the audience.
Anyway, I hope that Michael's part will be both interesting and perceptable. And that the plot won't be too vague.

And it turns out this week is a lucky one for Fassy fans as well!!!))))

I hope that Michael and Bale have scenes in this film and don't get cut out.
I trust our Fassy, he always made good choices but i don't trust Malick at all and probably this project is so secretive bc not even Malick knows what it is about.
I like Gosling, i consider him a good actor and i really don't underestand why so many good actors (and i'm also talking about Portman) want to work with such a disruped director.

Maybe Malick is just using the publicity these actors give him?
