TGIF 8.25.17

Now that the official TIFF guest list has been announced, I must admit I am relieved that Michael is not making the fall festival rounds this season. Whew! Yes, I'm selfish in knowing for a full year that I would not be able to attend; I am so glad I won't be missing his appearance in Toronto. Even with Michael being in Canada, near Montreal to be specific, it would have been convenient for him to swing down to the festival, especially since what's her face is going to be there with two films. I don't believe Michael's role in X-Men Dark Phoenix is going to be big, so he may be in Montreal for a short time before he begins promotional work for The Snowman (October 20th).

In all the years I have been covering Michael, 2017 has been his slowest film production year since 2007. But this should come as no surprise because Michael mentioned in several interviews, in early 2016, that he was going to take a much needed six month break from filming so that he can focus on other things. It's not that people don't want to hire him, or that there are no scripts being sent his way, it's the opposite; he's calling a time out for himself. After what I believe to be a most disappointing awards season over a year ago (his career high work in Macbeth and Steve Jobs - both released in late 2015), all but went unrewarded by the big awards. Along with the demands and stress of being an in demand actor, Michael needed time away from scripts to re-calibrate and focus on things that make him happy, and work on other aspects of film making, such as producing. When Michael's next lead or supporting role is announced, I'm sure it's going to be something he can really sink his teeth into and have fun with and just let the awards dice roll as they will. As a matter of fact, I'm quite looking forward to Michael taking on a hot supporting role in a film that turns out to be a surprise hit.
